I know how devastating and depressing an infestation can become. One thing I noticed over the years of growing plants is air circulation. At one time, I had over 100 African Violets, many from cuttings. When I had my cutting pots lined up edge to edge under a foil tent with 24 hour lights and no real air circulation, I had terrible mealy bugs and some spider mites. Once I put a gentle breeze on them and lots of dabs of alcohol (probably on 2 or 3 applications), my problem disappeared. I think a gentle breeze from a fan will help you keep pest free. Rick L Orchids swears by calcium supplements for orchids. He says that since he started to use a lot of calcium, his orchids don't get pests. I believe he grows indoors as well as out. And of course his outdoor plants get exposed to a lot of pests but also a lot of air circulation without any infestation. 💕🌞🌵😷

After watching to the end, I really think it was the pH in your bark has gone beyond your plant's tolerance. As you say some plants can survive in media 6, 7, or 8 years. I think media's life span has to do with the quality your media (was it fresh or old when it reached your orchid, you never know how long it's been in the bag) and your environment (the cooler your room, and dryer you keep the media the longer the media will last.) I wouldn't set a rule, i.e., in my environment bark lasts 5 years ... Because bark varies in freshness. But I would make a rule that when I first see mold, it's time to change the media... Here's why: because the mold is a new thing, it's telling you that something has changed that the mold likes and obviously the orchid didn't like, I'm guessing a pH change. My advice is that the first sign of mold, it's time for a change, don't wait for your orchid to decline, we never want declining orchids. You've already got good use out of your media. 💕🌞🌵😷

One thing I do differently, is that I give my orchid a good soak before a repot or up pot. That way, the roots are more flexible and less likely to snap and I feel confident to let the orchid sit out in the air 24 hours to let everything that I cut dry over. I put cinnamon on the stem and if there's any remaining leaf, but not on the roots. (I tried it once on the root that broke and it just kept drying, so I cut it again and let it air dry. 👍) Then I proceed with the potting. Sending lots of love 💕 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵 USA. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.

I'm new to orchid growing, but if I grew in bark, I would compare the pH of old vs new bark. Even Miss Orchid Girl says repeatedly that as bark breaks down it changes to a pH unacceptable to orchids. Remember, orchids grow in live bark in the wild. Because it's alive it doesn't break down. So yes, it's costly to change the bark every two years to preserve the media's pH in an acceptable range for orchids... But you don't have to throw the bark away. You can use it for your other plants (indoor or outdoor) that like the bark's new pH or compost it and mix it with soil as a supplement. Or even use it as top dressing. 💕🌞🌵😷

I started caring for my plants differently about 3 months ago using water from fruit and vegetable peels. It was pouring rain, and I tried to collect rain water using a pot. It should be full, but it's not. So I'm going to try your method. I have a table like you described. Wish me luck!

Thank you for your video on vanda care! I followed your way, by soaking vanda roots gradually for few hours then eventually overnight per week (with mix of fertilizer). And my vanda has been growing lots of roots for the last 3 months since I have it at home. Today I noticed that it is developing basal keiki 😍 cant wait for it to make another flower spike

Hello, thanks for your very informative videos on vanda’s. I live in North Florida. I have vanda’s hanging on my south facing porch in indirect sun. I’m using your watering method on my new vanda’s. I have two 5 gal buckets filled with water and once a week I place them in the bucket submerging the roots. I’m concerned about crown rot. Do you just soak the roots keeping the crown out of the water or does it matter. I soak mine over night then take them out of the bucket, turn them upside down and shake them to make sure that no water is in the crown.

Anyway, I have already discerned that my Tubtim x is likely going to be a larger size than I had expected, so I am checking out , in preparation, what you have done withVandas that have grown wonderfully - but are a bit TOO tall for their positions. This video of yours was JUST what was needed to give me heart. Please know how much you are helping with the videos!
